…turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning… I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm… ye shall praise the name of the LORD your God…and my people shall never be ashamed.Joel 2:12,25-26 KJV
Joel gives us the words that God was speaking to those who would be obedient, who would give their entire heart to Him. In this Scripture, God promises that He will restore everything that was taken from us and everything that has been corrupted. Cankerworms eat flower buds and leaves on trees and can prevent fruit from springing forth1; palmerworms are a type of caterpillar that appear suddenly in great numbers and devour plants and trees2.
Throughout life there are situations, people, and circumstances that present themselves; and they serve one purpose, and that is to devour all that God has given us. Satan uses life’s situations to rob us of things God meant for us; he uses our weaknesses to pull us away from God and out from under His covering so that the cankerworms can devour our fruit, and the palmerworms can swarm us and devour the leaves–leaves provide plants with the means to achieve photosynthesis, absorbing the light from the sun and turning it into usable form for the plant. Much like the literal characteristics of these worms, the metaphorical characteristics are the same; what was devoured–joy, peace, rest, finance, etc.–God has promised to restore to us in times of fasting, weeping, and mourning. At the end, God says, “and my people shall never be ashamed,” but this would be better translated to “my people shall never be put to shame.” This means that there is no shame and condemnation in Christ; what Satan meant for evil, God is going to turn it around for your good and His Glory. As you turn your whole self to Him during this time of fasting, He’s releasing you from the time of famine and restoring what was stolen; He is truly our great Reward!
Prayer for the Day:
Father, in Jesus’ Name I humble myself before You in fasting. Thank You for releasing me from my past and forgiving all my sins. Thank You for restoring my life and giving me the reward of eternal life. I give You praise
and glory and honor. Bless Your people as we continue to fast and pray. Bring the “spirit of release” causing Your people to walk in financial freedom. “Release” our loved ones. “Release” those that are bound by fear, depression and abuse. Release those bound by nicotine, gluttony and other addictions. Release them from
all bondage. Loose the bands of wickedness. Undo the heavy burdens. Let the oppressed go free. Release our families from every shame and guilt. Thank You that you will break the wicked bands! Hallelujah! Lord, the palmerworm has attacked the roots of Christian heritage in our families. But You said, “I will RESTORE THE FAMILY TREE OF FAITH!” I give You praise. My family IS GOING TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT! Oh Hallelujah! Father the greatest “reward” is You. Thanks for the stuff, but we’re fasting for more of You. You are our Reward and our exceeding greatness. We praise You, Jesus. Glory to God! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
